In Our View: Saving Wetlands ; 'Bank' Concept Is Drawing Compliments From Developers and Environmentalists

Summary


Developers and environmentalists agree (four words that rarely begin a sentence) that wetlands banking is a reasonable and effective way to allow both factions to pursue their interests.

The relatively new concept allows developers instead of mitigating their projects by enhancing nearby wetlands or creating "man-made" wetlands themselves to buy credits from a "bank," a company. That company would then acquire and even improve larger tracts of wetlands, thus more effectively conserving the environment.
