WASHINGTON - Just as he has nationally, Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean has leapt to the front of the pack among Democratic insiders in Washington state.

The former Vermont governor, whose early opposition to the Iraq war boosted his standing among left-leaning party activists, has support from nearly half of the state's "superdelegates" elected officials and other party insiders who will help select a nominee at this summer's convention, according to an Associated Press survey.
