Summary
Washington is one of about 30 states that require teenage drivers to advance through a rigorous set of restrictions before gaining full driving privileges. Many kids don't like it. Too bad. Granting driving privileges incrementally is a great idea, and statistics prove it.
The program went into effect in our state on July 1, 2001. In the 18 previous months, there were 45 fatalities statewide among drivers ages 15-18. In the 18 months after that date, there were 31 fatalities in that age group.
