A week ago today, new University of Washington President Mark Emmert was in Vancouver on a get-acquainted visit that included a meeting with The Columbian's editorial board.

Early on, there were casual comments about the UW football team's abysmal 2004 season. Emmert, previous chancellor at Louisiana State University, college football's co-national champion in 2003, said tersely, "We're going to fix it. It's important that we fix it." Monday, the UW and coach Keith Gilbertson, whose Huskies have a 1-7 won-loss record, announced Gilbertson would step down after this season.
