Port of Vancouver commissioners made the right decision Tuesday to delay any decision on a special Industrial Development District tax until next year.

According to a Columbian story by Jonathan Nelson, the motive for the decision was to allow more time to gather information on the financial impact of the tax increase, determine how a new rail line fits into the district plan and to get public feedback. Of those three reasons, the third is most important because this particular tax increase is different than most. It would occur without a public vote, as allowed by state law. And if taxpayers are not to be allowed a vote, then they at least ought to be provided with plenty of information and granted ample opportunity to express their opinions.
