They've been called "the sleepy '50s," and Dwight D. Eisenhower for years was criticized as doing little as president to wake Americans from their snooze.

But history has re-evaluated his presidency and Ike's stock has risen. Since the 1980s, The Associated Press reported last week, "several influential books revealed his 'hidden-hand' style of governing behind the folksy demeanor," including quiet efforts to undermine Sen. Joe McCarthy, the out-of-control communist hunter and real-life heavy in the movie, "Good Night, and Good Luck."
