In Our View: Esther Short Park ; the Park Is a Hit, and the City Must Start Recouping Some of Its Success

Summary


Esther Short Park has been one of the best things to happen to downtown Vancouver twice now. First, in 1855 when it was given to the people of Vancouver by city pioneer Esther Short. And again when the city, with help from donors George and Carolyn Propstra, invested in the park's upgrade that began in 1999.

The eye-pleasing greenspace in the center of downtown was dark and underused for decades. But at least it was preserved a natural oasis surrounded by concrete. The redevelopment plan brought a new brick square, glockenspiel, flower beds, rose garden, water feature and main stage to the space, and the park became irresistible. Esther Short Park has helped attract new businesses and residential units to the downtown area and is home to dozens of public and private events. The city needs to adapt again as a result.
