Too often the term "tailgating" seems to be loosely defined as: "Something other people do, and by the way, what's it gonna take to get all these slowpokes out of my way?" Instead of indicting others, here's a better strategy: If you as a driver pass a fixed point sooner than 2-4 seconds after the vehicle in front of you passed that same point, regardless of your speed, you just caught yourself tailgating. Better you serve as the enforcer than a law officer.

The 2-4 second rule was offered as a reminder in a story this week in The Oregonian, citing the Oregon Department of Transportation as the source. But the story's biggest news was a revelation that will surprise many people: "Tailgating is the No. 1 cause of car crashes in Oregon."
