It's just ducky that the bluebirds are returning to the Salem, Ore., area, but let's keep things in perspective. After all, the Bluebird Capital of the World is in Washington (despite what one Internet Web site says) and just a day-trip away for Clark County residents. More on that in a minute.

An Associated Press story in Monday's Columbian reported that an official of the Salem Audubon Society says the population of the attractive songbirds there is on the upswing after being nearly erased by urbanization and the influx of house sparrows and starlings in the 1900s.
