Travel to Drop Despite Cheap Gas

Summary

An Arco gas station sign in Woodland shows gas below $2. Despite the dip in prices at the pump more people are planning on spending the holiday closer to home.

Despite lower gasoline prices, 600,0000 fewer Americans are likely to travel this Thanksgiving period than last year, the first drop for that holiday since 2002, according to a AAA forecast released this week. In 2007, 41.6 million travelers went more than 50 miles from home. Gasoline prices have dropped, but people are still driving less because the broader economic climate has them pinching pennies, said Marie Dodds, director of public and government affairs for AAA Oregon/Idaho. In Vancouver today, the average gallon of regular unleaded is $2.19, down 3 cents overnight and from $3.12 a month ago, according to AAA figures. As this Woodland gas station proves, bargain hunters can now find fuel for less than $2 a gallon. The area's lowest tracked gasoline prices are available on The Columbian's traffic Web site.
