Targeting Gangs

Summary


Illegal street gangs in America are growing stronger, bolder and more violent. The 2009 National Gang Threat Assessment, released by the National Gang Intelligence Center and the National Drug Intelligence Center, pegs membership across the country at 1 million, with that group responsible for up to 80 percent of the crimes in the United States.

Clark County, with reports of rising gang activity in the region, is working with a new $399,446 federal stimulus grant to meet the challenge by reviving its efforts in a gang task force. The regional task force will include two Vancouver police officers and two county sheriffs deputies, all devoted full-time to gang suppression and targeted enforcement, according to a recent Columbian news story by Michael Andersen. The stimulus funding comes at just the right time, and were glad to see Vancouver back in the regional task force.
