TACOMA (AP) Plumes of toxic chemicals taint the groundwater beneath much of the 15-acre University of Washington-Tacoma campus, with cleanup costs totaling $1.5 million so far.

The contamination does not threaten the health of people in the area, but campus officials are finding it does pose a problem for the university budget. Total cost for the complicated underground cleanup has been estimated by university officials at $6.4 million
