OLYMPIA-- A 30-year campaign to pass a bill banning discrimination against gays in Washington entered a new phase Tuesday, with supporters optimistic that 2006 will be the year they finally prevail.

Close to 100 people, divided almost evenly between proponents and opponents of a bill to extend anti-discrimination laws to gays and lesbians, crowded into a hearing room to testify before the House State Government Operations and Accountability Committee. The hearing continued past the lunch hour and into the early afternoon.
