In Our View: Two Good Candidates ; Steve Stuart has Grown On the Job and Deserves Re-Election As Commissioner

Summary


Socal residents can't lose in the campaign for Clark County commissioner between incumbent Democrat Steve Stuart and Republican challenger Bruce Hagensen, a former Vancouver mayor. Each would make a fine commissioner and each has endorsements from groups and/or individuals associated with both political parties. In a close call, The Columbian recommends re-electing Stuart.

In late 2004, when Stuart was appointed to a seat on the Clark County Board of Commissioners to fill a vacancy, environmentalists and slow-growth proponents were counting on him to be a stand-up- and-shout opponent of full-throttle development. After all, before that appointment, Stuart had a career in the "smart growth" field. He was executive director of Friends of Clark County and also had been state policy director for 1000 Friends of Washington.
