But that gathering, featuring a career soldier who spent his last 27 years in the Vancouver area, illustrated an interesting aspect of global conflict 60 years ago: It was a big world war, but it could be a small world.

Ugiss, who died in 2002, was an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He volunteered for the Office of Strategic Services, a wartime intelligence agency that was the forerunner of the CIA.
