From the front, the Slocum House is a beautiful historic home placed perfectly in the corner of Vancouver's prime public gathering place, Esther Short Park. The county's oldest theater company, founded in 1966, has been operating out of the building for decades.

But a closer look reveals a dilapidated hodgepodge of an addition tacked onto the back (the perspective from which people inside the park view the structure). There are air conditioners in some windows. Plastic covers others.
