MOUNT ST. HELENS NATIONAL MONUMENT - Like the thousands of other spectators rushing to Mount St. Helens this weekend, Roy Trammell wasn't allowed any closer than the Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center, about 81/2 miles away.

But even if he couldn't get any closer, it's a good bet that he had the best view. Trammell had a telescope in the back of his truck that is about as big as he is.
