Portland Cabbies Take Us for a Ride

Summary


When he read last week's column in this space about Portland taxis picking up customers in Vancouver even though they aren't licensed here, Steve Brandt got mad all over again about the rip- off of his 85-year-old mother, who lives in the Fairway Village section of Cascade Park.

Brandt, who lives in Meadow Glade, near Battle Ground, was out of town that day in June and his mother became quite ill and called a cab to take her to Southwest Washington Medical Center. Whether by design or due to her discomfort and confusion, she called a Portland cab company. (They have ads in the Clark County Yellow Pages. The local phone number of one is a single digit removed from the Vancouver Cab Co. number.)
