OLYMPIA -- After a decade of running the Legislature or at least sharing power, Republicans are relegated to the sidelines, chafing and sometimes fighting each other.

Since the 2005 session was gaveled to a close, amid exuberant self-congratulations by Democrats who ran the whole show, House Republicans have switched leaders and are looking for a crisp new message and a more effective and robust strategy. Senate Republicans are restive, too, with occasional talk of a coup there, too.
