The Fort Vancouver Seafarers Center at the Port of Vancouver is the physical manifestation of a mostly unseen mission, a charity funded by a generous community, says Carl Landerholm, its executive director. Landerholm, 50, is leaving the job in early summer after 12 years to devote more time to his counseling practice and to pursue a doctoral degree.

He is only the third director of the center in its 38 years of welcoming and assisting visiting seamen to Vancouver, following John Larsson and Ron Hummel.
