Except for President Bush's most delirious sycophants, many Americans don't believe the rewards of re-election should include a $40 million, four-day binge of toasting, boasting, dancing and drinking. Yet that was what occurred in Washington, D.C., as President Bush began his second term.
Last week's pomp and pageantry failed to impress many Americans, and we can only speculate how people in other nations viewed the primping and preening. The inauguration's obscene swelling beyond the necessary swearing-in ceremony perpetuated the belief that Americans are a most arrogant and extravagant flock. One official formal ball Thursday night was not enough. There had to be 10.
