'Doing the right thing" is a powerful argument Kelso-based J.L Storedahl and Sons ought to consider in attempts to resume mining gravel in the pockmarked flood plain of the East Fork of the Lewis River near La Center. "Doing the right thing" is not a legal statement. It is a moral principle backed by logic.

At issue is whether Storedahl has a legal, pre-existing right to mine gravel at its Daybreak site. The company says it does. Opponents are adamant in their rejection of that assertion. Hearings examiner Daniel Kearns said he would accept comment only on that point.
