In Our View - Movie Madness ; School Gives Lesson in Propaganda

Summary

Example 911 of why public schools are often distrusted rightly or wrongly by parents and taxpayers comes from Mill Creek, just north of Seattle. That's where a Henry M. Jackson High School teacher decided to show "Fahrenheit 9/11" to her government class, supposedly as part of a lesson in propaganda in politics.

The high school appears to be propagandizing itself, as a result of the film's showing prior to Election Day. That's because the film is a compelling opinion piece by filmmaker Michael Moore. It offers interesting commentary on current affairs, but it is hardly a documentary as some claim. Even if labeled propaganda, it takes time and research to determine which claims in the movie are true, false or misleading. It's telling that "FahrenHYPE 9/11," a rebuttal to the Moore movie, was not sought by the teacher to help aid in the fact-finding. That would have helped make the exercise defensible.
