PORTLAND - Florida has its hurricanes. The Midwest has its tornadoes. And the Pacific Northwest has its volcanoes.

The earthquakes beneath Mount St. Helens in Washington state this week are a reminder that the mountains of the Cascade Range are part of a volcanic "ring of fire" that encircles the Pacific Ocean, running from the tip of South America up through Alaska, Japan and the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia, down through the Philippines and Indonesia into New Zealand.
