SPOKANE Vernon Baker had to wait more than 50 years to receive his Medal of Honor because of racism. Now the World War II veteran is battling the U.S. government for medical care for a brain tumor.

With the help of Idaho politicians, Baker has started receiving some Veterans Administration and Medicare benefits. And residents of the town of St. Maries, Idaho, where Baker lives, are organizing a fund-raiser to pay for thousands of dollars in medical bills he owes.
