Many of us in journalism were particularly saddened by the loss last week of author, commentator and historian David Halberstam, 73, who died in a California car crash.

Those eulogizing Halberstam in the days since have focused on his brilliant work related to war, politics and sports. He produced 15 best-sellers and numerous essays over his 40-year career. But it was Halberstam's business reporting that proved most inspirational to me.
