OLYMPIA -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday refused to throw a lifeline to Washington lawmakers who desperately wanted to avoid replacing the state's popular, but legally flawed, blanket primary.

Without comment, the high court left standing an appeals court ruling that tossed out a wide-open system that voters have used for nearly 70 years.
