GRANTS PASS, Ore. - U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio said Friday he hoped his new bill to promote thinning and protect old growth on Northwest national forests will become an issue in the presidential campaign.

DeFazio acknowledged that chances of any new bill passing Congress this session are "nil," but the Oregon Democrat, who is running for re-election, said he hoped it would fuel a discussion of forest policy that reaches beyond his own race.
