In Our View: Salmon in the Creek

Summary

Contrary to the often-contentious nature of the issue, the environmental movement does not always revolve around the Herculean task of solving climate problems. It does not have to be a tug-of- war between industry and nature. It does not have to be a black-and- white choice between the needs of humans and a desire to return the Earth to a pristine state.

No, sometimes environmental concerns can be as small as efforts to help Clark Countys Salmon Creek live up to its name. With this in mind, we welcome what appears to be a victory in the environmental battles. According to an article by Erik Robinson of The Columbian, state biologists believe that salmon are returning to their ancestral home of Salmon Creek north of Vancouver. Supported by groups such as the Salmon Creek Watershed Council, Clark County last year refashioned a 700-foot stretch of the channel beneath a rebuilt Highway 99 bridge over the creek. It was part of a $15.6 million construction project, providing some semblance of balance between the areas natural state and its growing urbanization. Now, biologists are trapping and tracking fish using radio tags and a weir spanning the creek near Klineline Pond. Last year, a spawned- out salmon carcass was found in the creeks upper reaches, indicating that efforts to enhance salmon migration are having an impact.
