In Our View: A New Marshall

Summary

It smells new, looks new, feels new. It's simply fabulous. But if you visit the remodeled Marshall Center, celebrating its grand reopening Sunday with events from noon to 6 p.m., don't expect to be Firstenburged. The Firstenburg Community Center on the east side of town remains the Taj Mahal of city recreation centers. Its size and amenities are simply so abundant, all other community centers are dwarfed by its enormity and elaborateness. Firstenburg even gives private health clubs a run for their money, with its 3,400 square foot Nautilus Fitness Center, expansive aerobics schedule and swim and water park.

But Marshall Center is refreshingly non-Firstenburg. It fits its surroundings and its 40-year-old history just right. Walk into the center at 1009 E. McLoughlin and you'll see that its beautiful hardwood ceilings have been refinished, updated floors and paint colors give the center a clean, hip feel and walls have turned into windows everywhere you look, allowing natural light to fill many rooms and bring the center to life.
