Summary
For much of what government does, we like the idea of "user fees." That goes for tolls on new bridges and express lanes, fees for boat ramps, overnight camping, private use of public rooms and buildings, etc. It also goes for criminals and violators, so we cheer the proposal to make legal offenders pay more for their transgressions, as Clark County commissioners are likely to do in a few weeks.
They will act on a proposal to boost fees charged misdemeanants for the home confinement and deferred prosecution programs and the fine charged for driving with a suspended license. The fee structure has not been changed since 1999. The proposed increases were spelled out in Friday's Columbian by reporter Michael Andersen.
