For too long, mental illness has been stigmatized rather than acknowledged and treated. Health insurance plans have followed suit, with many offering very limited benefits compared with the wide-ranging coverage offered for medical and chiropractic treatment. The result has been a legacy of human misery and missed opportunity.
The new rules, promulgated by the Obama administration, require group health plans to provide their enrollees with the same level of mental health and substance abuse treatment benefits as those offered for medical and surgical services. Co-payments for these services cannot exceed the charges an individual would pay for a medical or surgical appointment, according to Sen. Maria Cantwell, D- Wash., who is a supporter of the change.
