Clark County school districts, like others around the country, face massive budget cuts. The Vancouver and Evergreen districts are searching for ways to trim $14 million to $15 million each over the next two years. Compounding this budget crisis are at least two variables:

* Uncertainty about a special session of the state Legislature. Gov. Chris Gregoire wants to call for one by the end of this week, but as of Wednesday afternoon it hadnt happened. A special session could (and should, we say) produce a bill that would lift state limits on levies already approved by voters. When budget problems are this severe, theres nothing wrong with opening purse strings as previously authorized by voters.
