SEATTLE - Sunny conservative Dino Rossi and Democrat Christine Gregoire, the tough attorney general who took on the tobacco industry, were locked in a superclose race for Washington governor Tuesday.

With 31 percent of the precincts reporting, the rivals both had 49 percent, with Rossi ahead by 7,000 votes out of more than 1.2 million cast. Ruth Bennett, a Libertarian, was far back at 2 percent.
