Kelso-based J.D. Storedahl and Sons will get a long-awaited federal permit this week allowing the company to expand its gravel mining operations on 100 acres near the East Fork of the Lewis River, home to threatened salmon and steelhead, without risk of violating the Endangered Species Act.

The incidental take permit, issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under a provision of the federal law, will be the first in the Northwest covering gravel mining near a stream that harbors federally protected fish.
