LYLE -- While Heleen Kerkhoff was visiting from Amsterdam last week, her sister, Susan Parsons, knew an ideal location in the Columbia River Gorge where the two could hike.

Parsons knew the slopes along the Cherry Orchard Trail on the outskirts of Lyle would be dotted with spring wildflowers, with views from the north ridge reminiscent of the Gorge's most popular hikes, such as Dog Mountain.
