One of my favorite cousins came to town and gathered everyone together. After she made a special visit with the two elder relatives, she called me to say, "I just learned that our grandmother's brother-in-law was a bootlegger and that he got in trouble with the authorities."

Bootlegging, which was making or selling alcoholic beverages during Prohibition, was a federal offense, so it was serious. It was also common. Still, do you tell about the arrest in the family history, or do you ignore it?
