When they respond to a call, hostage negotiators are rarely faced with someone who is holding people against their will and threatening to hurt them.

"Most of them are people in crisis," said Cpl. Kit Abernathy of the Vancouver Police Department. He is one of two leaders for the Southwest Washington Hostage Negotiator Team. The team also includes members of the Clark County Sheriff's Office.
