When Carla Kendall-Bray received the call, she was in her father's hospital room at the Southwest Washington Medical Center, where he was recovering from a heart attack and trio of strokes. Her mother was on the line, telling her that Kendall-Bray's 4-year-old son, Alexei, just had fallen and was in an ambulance headed for Legacy Emmanuel in Portland.

With her infant daughter, Hailey, in tow, Kendall-Bray rushed from hospital to hospital to discover that her toddler had leaned on a second-story window screen of their Hazel Dell home, tumbled out and shattered his skull when he landed head-first on the driveway below.
