The Battle Ground Public Schools election failed days ago and layoff notices to teachers and other employees were sent out weeks ago, but the blue signs still dot Battle Ground's Main Street and Highway 503.

"We Believe in Battle Ground Schools," the signs read, urging voters to support the maintenance and operations levy that failed to get the 60 percent approval required. It had the support of 59.25 percent of voters.
