Oceangoing ships may not be able to take advantage of a deeper Columbia River shipping channel for years to come, but the $157 million project is already paying off for one of its prime beneficiaries.

With considerable fanfare, the Port of Portland announced earlier this month that it had landed an Israel-based shipping container line, ZIM USA. Port officials credited the promise of a deeper channel, from 40 to 43 feet, with helping to entice the firm to choose Portland as its West Coast hub for ships carrying goods to and from Asia and Europe through the Panama Canal.
