The nation's volcano hazards program suffers from a lack of resources severe enough that at least a quarter of the "truly dangerous" volcanoes in the United States are left without so much as a single seismometer to determine whether they're stirring to life.

Mount St. Helens has grabbed headlines over the past month, but the USGS also must keep tabs on a slew of other volcanoes throughout the country.
