WASHOUGAL -- Efforts failed Saturday to free the 360-foot Empress of the North cruise ship from a shallow patch of the Columbia River near Washougal, where it had run aground Friday morning.

Working with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Washington Department of Ecology, the Seattle-based American West Steamboat Co. further lightened the ship's load Saturday by draining about 20,000 gallons of diesel fuel. On Friday, the 260 passengers and their luggage had been taken to shore.
