Undefeated Miguel Cotto stopped Carlos Quintana in the fifth round Saturday night at Atlantic City, N.J., to win the vacant WBA welterweight title.

Quintana, bleeding from his mouth and from under his left eye after absorbing a sustained attack by Cotto, was knocked down twice in the fifth round and staggered back to his corner. The fight was stopped before he could come out for the sixth round.
