"It's a very open environment, very kid-friendly," said Kristi Howard, whose eight children pretty much guarantee kid-friendliness topping her values list.

Howard can step out the front door of her ground-floor apartment and view her whole brood ages 2 to 16 climbing on the monkey bars, racing across the lawn or just chilling in the courtyard.
