A New Year's Day storm greeted Oregon and Washington on Thursday, coating roads throughout the state with sheets of ice, dumping inches of snow and reducing visibility in places to near nothing.

For the first time in years, transportation officials were requiring drivers to use chains on all of Interstate 5 in Oregon, from Ashland all the way to Portland, a distance of about 300 miles.
