It's scientific name is the "Vaccinium membranaceum," which sounds like some yucky medicine or an obscure body part rather than the tasty and much-sought-after wild mountain huckleberry.

Fortunately, the Gifford Pinchot National Forest staff appreciates the hallowed status of the berries and their recreational as well as nutritional value. As reported last week by The Columbian's Allen Thomas, there's a plan afoot to improve the availability of these scrumptious purple pearls of the Pinchot.
