Summary

A bill championed by U.S. Rep. Brian Baird that would speed post- fire salvage logging in federal forests cleared the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday. The Forest Emergency Recovery and Research Act, co-sponsored by Baird, D-Wash., and Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., passed 243 to 182.

Baird, who broke ranks with fellow Northwest Democrats to support the bill, said it will be "good for the environment and the economy as well." Forty-one other Democrats joined 202 Republicans in voting for the measure. Among Washington Republicans, only Rep. Dave Riechert voted against it, saying the environmental exemptions it allows aren't needed to remove damaged timber after fires or windstorms.
