Automaker Renault Plans Plant in India

PARIS -- Renault SA unveiled plans Thursday for a major new automobile plant in India, intended to drive a tenfold production increase in one of the world's fastest-growing markets. Its alliance partner, Nissan, said it may also make vehicles at the facility.

Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of both Renault and Nissan, said the French automaker will build an assembly line and engine factory with Mumbai-based Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. -- its partner in a joint venture set up last year to produce 50,000 of Renault's low-cost Logan sedans annually from 2007 on.
