Southwest Washington residents may yet get a sample of the power of Mount St. Helens if an eruption spews ash sky-high.

It's been two decades since Southwest Washington residents gave much thought to ash masks, but scientists on Sunday didn't rule out the risk of an eruption at Mount St. Helens dumping ash 50 miles away in Vancouver. Ash is not highly toxic, but it can cause health problems for infants, the elderly and those with respiratory ailments. Thick ash can collapse a roof, and lighter dustings can abrade and jam machinery.
